Supplemental Security Income, better known as SSI, is a Federally run program that provides money to people who have little or no income, few resources and who are aged, blind or disabled. Social Security Disability benefits provide disability protection in the form of monthly cash benefits to disabled workers and their families for the duration of the disability, depending upon their eligibility to receive such benefits. Disabled widows, widowers, or disabled surviving divorced spouses aged 50 through 59 who meet the other requirements for entitlement to widow's or widower's insurance benefit may qualify for monthly cash benefits. Several months after applying for Social Security benefits, you will receive either a “Notice of Award,” indicating that your claim for benefits was granted or a “Notice of Disapproved Claim,” indicating that your initial application for benefits has been denied. If you believe your claim for Social Security benefits was wrongfully denied, you have a right to appeal this denial. In order to be entitled to Social Security retirement benefits, a claimant must be (1) fully insured; (2) have attained age 62; (3) have filed an application for old-age insurance or have been entitled to disability insurance benefits for the month preceding the month in which the claimant attained retirement age; and (4) must meet the retirement test. Medicare is a social health insurance program for people age 65 or older, for certain people with disabilities who are under 65, and for people of any age who have permanent kidney failure. Certain qualified individuals may also buy into the program regardless of age.
