SPEAKERS
William McKendree is director of the Pennsylvania Healthcare Benefit Solutions program, a 501(c)(3) non-profit agency helping people access affordable healthcare services through counseling, education and advocacy. Prior to his work at PHBSP, Mr. McKendree was program manager for the Allegheny County APPRISE office — Pennsylvania’s Health Insurance Assistance Program. During his 13 years at APPRISE, more than 20,000 residents of Allegheny County were helped each year as they navigated through the complexities of state and federal healthcare benefit programs. And before running Allegheny County APPRISE, he was director of the Western Pennsylvania Center for Aging Services, helping Pennsylvania’s seniors access medical, legal and social services. In addition to his work at PHBSP, Mr. McKendree teaches at the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Pharmacy, and is preceptor for the School of Pharmacy’s Experiential Learning Program at the Birmingham Free Health Clinic (on Pittsburgh’s South Side). He also regularly teaches classes on health law and health care policy at Penn State University, La Roche University and Community College of Allegheny County.
Colin Morgan is a Certified Elder Law Attorney (CELA), the certification specialty awarded by the National Elder Law Foundation (NELF) as authorized by the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania. He assists clients in all phases of the long term care planning process. This includes Medicaid eligibility, Veterans benefits planning and traditional estate planning, all with an emphasis on issues specific to aging clients as well as younger clients with disabilities. In addition, Atty. Morgan assists families planning for children with special needs, including transitioning to adulthood as well as planning for litigation proceeds of injury victims who need to maintain important government benefits such as SSI and Medicaid. He is a frequent speaker on various Elder Law topics for the Community College of Allegheny County, and for health care professional education seminars and for community groups.
SEMINAR
This presentation is an overview of the Medicare system. The goal is to provide a basic understanding of how Medicare functions and how it can be effectively used to obtain affordable quality health services. We will examine the purpose and design of Medicare; Medicare’s eligibility and enrollment criteria; and the various components that comprise the Medicare system — how they function and interact with each other and coordinate with non-Medicare health care coverage.
