Duties & Responsibilities

  • Maintain a case load which includes representation of clients from preliminary hearing through trial or representation of clients on appeal. Manage all cases by interviewing clients, witnesses and police officers. Preparing and conferring with investigators for case investigation in anticipation of trial. Research, draft and file all pre-trial motions in a timely manner. Negotiate with the District Attorney's Office any potential plea agreement prior to trial. Prepare and file all post-sentence motions and requests for appellate review in a timely manner.
  • When representing an appellate client, researching, drafting and filing all appellate pleadings and briefs in a timely manner. Working with the trial attorney to identify issues for appeal. Other duties as required or assigned.

Summer Law Clerk

The City of Erie is seeking applicants for a part time Summer Law Clerk. This could potentially lead to a full time position with the City of Erie.


The successful applicant will have the opportunity to work closely with the attorneys in the Solicitor’s office. The successful applicant will assist with a wide variety of municipal law such as drafting ordinances, resolutions, agreements and assist in labor and employment matters. The successful applicant will also attend municipal meetings, City Council meetings and court hearings.

An Administrative Secretary is need in the Erie County Public Defender's Office.

  • General office management such as answering phones and speaking with potential clients to determine whether they qualify for services, assisting attorneys, and performing clerical work that includes maintaining records, paying invoices, and entering data in addition to a variety of other tasks.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • As may be required by department head, performs any or all of the following duties:
  • Maintain client confidentiality;
  • Screen and assist all walk-in applicants at the Public Defender's Office, including the determination of eligibility of services;
  • Assist in the preparation of legal documents including motions, petitions, orders and briefs prepared for the Court of Common Pleas and the Pennsylvania appellate courts;
  • Receive and distribute incoming mail for the department, as well as processing outgoing mail;
  • Support attorneys and investigative staff by typing correspondence, answering phone calls and filing and retrieving documents and information when necessary;
  • Receive, record and distribute to the appropriate attorney or investigator messages, information requests and/or complaints received via phone, email or in person;
  • Create case files for the attorneys;
  • Schedule/confirm preliminary hearing dates for the attorneys;
  • Make and schedule office appointments for the attorneys;
  • Assist, as needed, the preparation of the daily Court Schedule;
  • Assist Magisterial District Judge Offices and Court Administration in identifying Public Defender clients;
  • Keep accurate calendars for the attorneys;
  • Participate as a courier between the Department and the Court House;

  • Create requisitions/pay authorizations;
